Martina Clavadetscher

Martina Clavadetscher, born in Zug in 1979, is one of the “most original and daring voices of her generation” (NZZ am Sonntag). She masterfully plays across the entire spectrum of literary forms. After studying German literature, linguistics and philosophy, Clavadetscher worked for various theatres and has received numerous awards for her plays. Her novel Die Erfindung des Ungehorsams won the Swiss Book Prize in 2021.
In Die Schrecken der anderen, Clavadetscher reflects on Switzerland’s repressed links to National Socialism. A police archivist and an elderly woman attempt to solve a murder case. In their investigations, the two gradually uncover a society of top-hat wearers, the town’s wealthiest family and mysterious financial donations to right-wing extremists. “Right to the heart of Switzerland’s self-image,” says the NZZ. Die Schrecken der anderen is a political and historical-philosophical novel that holds up a mirror to Switzerland. For this – of all things, one might say – Clavadetscher was awarded one of the Swiss Literature Prizes awarded by the Federal Office of Culture.
