Brenda Navarro
Mexico
The Mexican author, sociologist, and economist Brenda Navarro was born in 1982. After studying in Mexico and Barcelona, she founded the editorial group #EnjambreLiteratio that supports women’s writing. Along with two novels, Navarro has also published short stories, essays, and poetry. She lives in Madrid.
Brenda Navarro’s debut novel Empty Houses plays out against the background of the Mexican War on drugs. In a moment when his mother was distracted, three-year-old Daniel is abducted from a playground by another woman who can suddenly fulfill her desire for a child. Navarro describes not only the mother’s pain, despair, and guilt but also that of Daniel’s kidnapper. This double perspective complicates any simple interpretation of what is said and heard and is one of this highly acclaimed novel’s greatest strengths. The two very different protagonists are connected by the same desire for an independent life in a society dominated by machismo. Brenda Navarro holds a mirror up to this society. “A ruthless story about motherhood and gender violence,” La Nación says in summary.
