Wilfried Meichtry

Born in 1965 in Leuk, Wilfried Meichtry is a writer, screenwriter, and historian. He first became known for his vivid double biography of Iris and Peter von Roten with the telling title Verliebte Feinde (Enamored Enemies). His biography of Mani Matter is also particularly noteworthy, as is his Die Welt ist verkehrt, nicht wir! Katharina von Arx und Freddy Drilhon (The World is Wrong, Not Us! Katharina von Arx and Freddy Drilhon). A film adaptation of the book came out in 2018; Wilfried Meichtry wrote the screenplay written and co-directed it with Marcel Gisler.
In his first novel, Nach oben sinken (Sinking Upwards), Wilfried Meichtry tells a story of growing up within and wanting to escape the narrow confines of a village in Valais. He portrays the effects of keeping silent and shows how important it is to protect and care for the imagination. His depiction of the ways in which belief and silence have shaped life in Valais is striking. At the same time, he has put a great deal of himself in the novel, “which doesn’t at all mean that everything is true.” He has succeeded in creating “a remarkable rendition of the atmosphere in the Upper Valais in the 1970s and 80s.” (Simon Leuthold, SRF)
