Tash Aw

Tash Aw, born in 1971, grew up in Kuala Lumpur and studied law at Cambridge and Warwick. He now lives in Paris and Provence. He shot to fame in 2006 with his novel The Harmony Silk Factory. Since then, he has received numerous awards, been nominated three times for the Booker Prize and his work has been translated into more than 20 languages.
His latest work, The South, opens a four-volume novel cycle and takes us to Malaysia in the 1990s. At its heart is sixteen-year-old Jay, who grew up in the city and is set to take over his late grandfather’s plantation in the south of the country – together with Chuan, the son of the former manager, who is three years his senior. It is a seemingly hopeless undertaking given the state of the fields, crops and buildings. Against this backdrop, a love story develops between Jay and Chuan that transcends origins and class boundaries, whilst simultaneously – as is always the case with Aw – telling the complex story of modern Asia. “Aw is a master at weaving sociological insights into intimate scenes”, writes The Guardian. A coming-of-age and coming-out story – but so much more. Der Süden is published in German in August; Tash Aw will be reading from it in Leukerbad.
