Vea Kaiser

Vea Kaiser, born in St. Pölten in 1988, studied Classical and German Philology and Creative Writing. She was just 23 when she published her first novel: Blasmusikpop oder Wie die Wissenschaft in die Berge kam became a huge hit with the public. She has also won over literary critics with her satirical wit, lively tone and blend of humour and seriousness.
In her latest novel, Fabula Rasa oder Die Königin des Grand Hotels, the author once again skilfully combines major social issues with entertaining life stories. The novel tells the (true) story of the young Viennese bookkeeper Angelika Moser, who works her way up in the world of a grand hotel and begins to manipulate the figures there – initially for the benefit of the crisis-stricken traditional establishment. But why not siphon a little something into her own account – is that so reprehensible for a notoriously cashstrapped single mother?
There have been many picaresque novels – this fast-paced female version is great fun and is also an “entertaining social history of Austria” (Falter) over the last 50 years – complete with a good dose of Viennese wit.
