Stefan Gartmann
Switzerland
Stefan Gartmann was born in 1962 in Santa Maria in the Münstertal valley. After studying German language and literature, Italian literature and modern general history at the University of Basel, he returned to Graubünden, where he lectured at the University of Applied Sciences for over 30 years. Today he works as a freelance author; Falätscha. Vom Schweigen in den Bergen is his debut novel.
Falätscha is set deep in the Safien Valley, where Gartmann worked as a farmhand during his summer holidays as a schoolboy. The discovery of a dead body shocks the alp of the same name and draws attention to a crime committed 28 years earlier. Falätscha follows in the tradition of crime novels as previously written by Dürrenmatt or Glauser; the description is accurate, yet by no means sufficient. During his investigations, Inspector Jon Calonder delves deep into the community of mountain dwellers and uncovers a story of guilt and atonement, a crime in which the boundaries between perpetrator and victim become blurred. Set against the striking landscape of the Safien Valley, this story keeps readers on the edge of their seats for over 600 pages.
