Sayaka Murata

Sayaka Murata was born in 1977 in Tokyo, where she currently lives and works. She has published ten novels and numerous collections of short stories. Following the success of the English translation of her novel Convenience Store Woman in 2018, it was translated into 30 languages. The short story collection, Life Ceremony, was her first work to be translated into German in 2022. Sayaka Murata is one of the most important and original voices in contemporary Japanese literature. With humorous effortlessness, she addresses questions of normality and social pressures that reach far beyond the Japanese context. In her writing, she explores the various consequences of nonconformity in society on men and women, especially with regard to gender roles, parenthood, and sexuality. From January to the end of June 2024, Sayaka Murata will be the Zurich Writer-in-Residence on the invitation of the Literaturhaus Zürich.
