Sarah Elena Müller
Switzerland
Born in 1990, the artist, columnist, and musician Sarah Elena Müller works across several media. She studied at the University of Arts in Bern and the F+F School of Art and Design. Müller is a co-founder of the feminist writers’ collective RAUF. Along with her literary work, Müller is part of the Spoken Pop Duo Cruise Ship Misery and from 2019 to 2023 she led the virtual reality project Meine Sprache und ich—an approach to Ilse Aichinger’s language criticism.
In 2023, her newly published Bild ohne Mädchen (Picture without Girls) was the most discussed Swiss book of the year. It recounts the story of a child growing up in a Swiss mountain village in the 1980s and 90s. Müller evokes a family trauma and creates a panorama of women’s biographies since the 1960s. This Bernese author succeeds in addressing the question of child abuse from an unbiased narrative stance and with precise language. Franz Hohler describes the contrast established by the author between her style and the contents of her novel: “Sarah Elena Müller proves in her first novel that she is able to put the facility of her verbal art in service to a serious topic.” These qualities brought Müller’s debut novel a nomination for the Swiss Book Prize.
