Laura Vogt
Switzerland
Laura Vogt was born in Appenzell in 1989. She studied creative writing at the Swiss Literature Institute in Biel and cultural studies at the University of Lucerne. In addition to prose, Vogt writes poetry, plays and journalistic pieces; she is a literary translator and curates the reading series Sofalesungen in Eastern Switzerland. Her work has been recognised with various grants and scholarships, most recently in 2025 with a scholarship from the Kunst + Kultur Foundation as part of the German Prize for Nature Writing.
In Das Jahr des Kalks (The Year of Lime), Vogt’s protagonist processes her grief at parting with her beloved uncle through an ever-deepening confrontation with lime – the two of them used to enjoy hiking in the mountains together. Laura Vogt gently unravels a “geology of letting go”, as the St. Galler Tagblatt aptly puts it. It intertwines family history with the history of the Earth. What emerges is an exploration of the big question: how did we become who we are?
