Katja Brunner, one of Switzerland’s most successful contemporary playwrights, was born in Zurich in 1991. She studied writing and applied theatre studies in Berlin and Giessen. With her first play, Von den Beinen zu kurz, she won the Mühlheim Playwright Prize in 2013 as the youngest ever recipient. Since then, she has published numerous other award-winning plays. Katja Brunner is a co-founder of the feminist writers’ collective RAUF.
In her essay-speech text Die Kunst der Wunde, Katja Brunner reflects on the body and how the state influences these bodies. In doing so, she places her text within the tradition of Judith Butler and explores how our language hierarchises the vulnerability of different bodies. “Brunner paints a broad panorama of how we talk about bodies, how we dispose of bodies and, above all, how we inflict violence on bodies – yet do not always condemn this immediately,” writes Die deutsche Bühne. Essentially philosophical ideas are conveyed here with such linguistic power and wit that one cannot escape them.
