Joshua Cohen

The US-American writer, university teacher, and essayist, Joshua Cohen was born in 1980 and studied composition at the Manhattan School of Music. From 2001 to 2007, Cohen was the Eastern Europe correspondent for the English-language edition of the Jewish-American publication The Forward. He also translates from German and Hebrew into English. His most recent novel The Netanyahus was awarded the 2022 Pulitzer Prize and established him as one of the leading writers of his generation.
When Joshua Cohen takes our present times to task, he hits where it hurts. In his essays translated into German and collected in Aufzeichnungen aus der Höhle (Notes from the Cave), he takes an entirely individual approach to the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel and finds in it “drastic allegories for America and the world.” (FAZ) Cohen reacts with stunning scorn to human madness and addresses difficult questions that have no easy answers. In his writing, he turns again and again to literature, producing complex and occasionally farcical texts.

Joshua Cohen wanted to travel from Israel, which is currently not possible. The events are to take place hybrid; if possible, we will connect Joshua Cohen via Zoom. As the security situation in Israel is currently very tense, it is possible that the events will not be able to take place at short notice or will have to be canceled early.
The ‘Perspectives’ discussion between Joshua Cohen and Christian Kracht unfortunately has to be canceled.
