Frank Witzel

Born in Wiesbaden in 1955, Frank Witzel first completed a musical education at the Wiesbaden Conservatory. His first poems were published in 1975, his first poetry volume in 1978, and his first novel in 2001. Frank Witzel also writes essays and radio plays and works as an illustrator, a radio moderator, and a translator. He lives in Offenbach.
His novel Die Erfindung der Roten Armee Fraktion durch einen manisch-depressiven Teenager im Sommer 1969 (The Invention of the Red Army Faction by a Manic-depressive Teenager in the Summer of 1969) was awarded the 2015 German Book Prize. In Meine Literaturgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts (My 20th Century Literary History), Frank Witzel goes in search of forgotten 20th century writers and presents more than one hundred of his discoveries. As if in passing, this idiosyncratic and personal canon creates a poetics of the publishing industry with its ironies, foolishness, disappointed hopes, and great expectations.
