Dean Bowen
Netherlands
Born in the Netherlands in 1984, Dean Bowen came to prominence with his 2018 poetry collection Bokman (Billy Goat), a profound exploration of identity. Language, family, origins, and diaspora are central themes in Dean Bowen’s writing, which reflects his Surinamese roots and the story of that country. He dives into Surinam’s history, from its indigenous peoples, through the Dutch colonial reign, to the Maroons and enslaved people.
In Ik vond geen spoken in Achtmaal (I Found No Ghosts in Achtmaal), he asks what remains of us after we die.
In his works, Dean Bowen calls into question political and social dynamics using virtuosic and playful language. His performances are eruptive, powerful, and engaging. Along with his creative writing, he organizes literary programs and leads workshops.
