Sibylla Vričić Hausmann

Born in 1979, Sibylla Vričić Hausmann studied literature, linguistics, and philosophy in Münster and Berlin. After completing her studies, she had an internship in a theater in Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) for two years. Back in Germany, she completed a second degree at the German Literary Institute in Leipzig. She has published poems, essays, scholarly texts, and short prose in journals and anthologies. She lives in Leipzig with her two children.

For her first volume of poetry, 3 Falter (Three Moths), she received several grants and awards, including the Orphil Debut Prize. In the jury statement, Björn Jager explained their choice: “In fourteen triptychs, Sibylla Vričić Hausmann explores desire and wounds. She boldly varies her linguistic resources and reflects facets of female identity over the centuries in images that are as sharp poetically as analytically.” Her most recent collection of poetry, Meine Faust (My Fist), connects the themes of motherhood and authorship and draws links from her own mother to Mechthild von Magdeburg all the way to Elton John. In an interview with an online magazine, she addressed motherhood: “Sometimes it constrains me, sometimes it helps me, but it always influences the structure of my processes. A lovely short-term balance between my writing time and free time with my daughter in the summer meant that I was able to finish the book in 2022.”
