Laure Gauthier

Laure Gauthier was born in 1972 and lives in Paris. From 1990 to 1998, she studied German Literature with a focus on theater studies at the Sorbonne in Paris as well as in Hamburg. She staged several plays by Elfriede Jelinek in Hamburg, where she also founded the German-French theater group Les Femmes. She has collaborated with many artists and composers. Her own work includes poetry, stories, essays, libretti, and multi-media art forms.

Recently, her collection of poems kaspar aus stein (stone kaspar) was translated from French into German by Andreas Unterweger. According to the author, it is a “poetic story that lends a voice to Kaspar Hauser, the foundling who mysteriously appeared at the gates of Nürnberg in 1828 after 17 years imprisonment.” Kaspar Hauser is portrayed in her book as a highly gifted, abused child and brought into the present. The author rejects the classic Kaspar Hauser myth and instead poetically transforms the historical foundation. The reviewer in the NZZ judged the novel a “masterly work of art.”
